An intrinsic section of St. Xavier’s College, the department of English maintains the essence of humanities, and accommodates the ABCs of the language for all pupils in the college on intermediate, undergraduate and post graduated levels. Its mission is to foster students for the art of reading, writing and analytical thinking for competitive global outfit. These learnings are inculcated through critical and creative pedagogy. The department offers students various courses on language and literature as compulsory papers and other courses as functional papers. Besides, the faculties of department of English are engaged in other departments in the teaching of language and literature for the overall growth of the students.

The aim of the department thus remains to metamorphose the students into academically sound, socially responsible, morally upright and globally competent persons having the Jesuit Spirit of dedication to excellence, leadership and service.

Activities and Publication:

Year -2013

  • Mr. Kunda Dixit had a fruitful visit and talk on the issue of ‘Professionalism in Journalism’ on 28th October 2013.
  • Mr. Abhay Kumar, the Head Press Information and Culture, Secretary B.P. Koirala India Nepal Foundation, Embassy of India was invited for the Talk program on ‘Poets and Poetry’ on November 8th 2013.
  • A second year 2013 batch field survey to Malekhu, Dhading. November 14th -16th 2013
  • Short Film Festival organized by the department to mark the silver Jubilee year as planned in the previous year on 9th December 2013.
  • Subject seminar organized for literature students. Prof. Hriseekesh Upadhayaya, member at English Subject Committee, TU.
  • The students of B.A released a wall magazine on the corridor of the first floor ‘Academic Block’ on the theme ‘Ecology and Creativity’.


Year -2014

  • B.A third year 2010 batch photographic tour to Ghalegaun, Bandipur, Gorkha and Sauraha. January 1st 2014
  • B.A third year 2011 batch photographic trek to Pokhara, Ghorepani, Poonhill and Ghandruk. February 28th -30th 2014
  • MA Thesis Proposal defense for batch (2011) on 25th and 26th March 2014.
  • B.A Family Week organized on March 2014.
  • Workshop by Fr. Roy Sebastian on 4th April 2014 on ‘Photography’
  • Social Service Camp organized for B.A I, II year Journalism and M.A second year students in Dharmasthali, Basnet Tar and Dhital Gaun of North Kathmandu from April 11th-13th April 2014
  • Research Committee Meeting organized on 31st December 2014.
  • B.A third year batch 2011 journalism students have published ‘Infinity Magazine’ and have been publishing monthly newspaper ‘The Collage’.
  • B.A Journalism students published photographs on notice board (Weekly/Monthly).


Year 2015

  • The Department of English invited Mr. Rabindra Mishra, Practical Philanthropist' & 'Philanthropic Journalist and Editor of BBC Nepali Service & Founder President of global charity, HELP NEPAL Network for a Talk programme on the  Present Global issues on Social Work on 18th of February,2015


Year -2016

  • Protection Centre Service in Dillibazar on 21st Feb and 13th march 2016 respectively.
  • Celebration of the International Women Day at Wartin Hall on 8th March 2016 with various programs focusing on women’s issues.
  • Conducted relief program for the fire victims in Sinamangal on 31st March, 2016 (Guest speaker- Sapana Malla Pradhan and Subhash Ghimire , and Cultural Programme)
  • Celebration of St. Xavier’s day on 3rd December with various programs at Bal Bikas Primary School, Hattiban, Nyayik Sansar Kalimati and Association for the Protection of the Children
  • Father Milos from Czechoslovakia delivered a lecture on St. Augustine’ Philosophy
  • Talk Program on 66th International Human Rights Day- 10th December, Speaker: Renowned Human Right Activist: Mr. Kapil Shrestha.


Report on the Activities Conducted in/by the Department of English

Year -2014

  • B.A Family Week was organized on March 2014 with various academic and extracurricular activities.
  • The Department of English had an opportunity to have Mr. Deepak Shrestha as a guest speaker for the talk programme on Critical and Creative Thinking of English Language and Literature on 26th of January.
  • Conducted relief program for the fire victims in Sinamangal on 31st March, 2016.
  • Students of Journalism III year visited Langtang as Photography tour from October 11 to December 3, 2014.
  • Students from B.A. Social Work, participated in North-South-South Hope Network organized in collaboration with St.Xavier’s Maitighar, Lalitpur Nursing Campus and DIAK University from 27 October to November7, 2014.
  • B.A.Third year 2012 batch photographic tour to Langtang and Kyazin Gompa. 29th 0ctober , 2014
  • Social Work Camp for B.A. II Year from November 24th to November 28th, 2014 at Gimdi, Lalitpur.

  • First Terminal Exams for all three year students conducted from December 22nd, 2014
  • B. A second year journalism students went to Bhaktapur, Budhanilkantha for photographic field visits.
  • Regularly visiting and coordinating 85 different human welfare organizations to facilitate the internship program for the Social Work Student.
  • Father Milos from czechoslovakia delivered a lecture on St. Augustine’ Philosophy.
  • Fr. Jomon joined the department.


  • Students of journalism and social work visited Lamjung and Ghandruk for their field camp April 2016.
